We have been considering for some time the condition of Kerne Bridge.

The concern is that plants growing out of the structure may be causing structural damage potentially undermining its safety. We believe that urgent maintenance work may be required for this historic landmark as it approaches its 200 year anniversary.

We have been advised that a structural survey of the bridge was being carried out by Herefordshire Council in 2024. As a Freedom of Information request can you advise if a survey was carried out and if so what the survey results were (a copy would be appreciated).

Answer: The Service Area have advised we have a planned Principal Inspection for this bridge in the financial year 24/25 and had hoped to carry that out by the end of 2024, unfortunately that was not possible due to the limited availability of the specialised access platform required.

At the time of this enquiry, we do not have an Principal Inspection to share from 2024.

We currently have the Principal Inspection scheduled for 23/24th January 2025, but this may be disrupted by the forecast Storm Eowyn as the inspection will be carried out from a lorry mounted Bridge access platform which cannot work in high winds. If the storm disrupts the inspection, we will be looking to get it carried out as soon as possible but at a later date.

It is our intention to remove the vegetation growing out of the bridge during the course of this inspection.
