FOI release

Full-time equivalent school attendance staff

Case reference FOI2022/01301

Published 3 October 2022

Request

I would like to request, under the freedom of information act, the number of full-time equivalent school attendance staff employed by your council as of July in each of the years from 2011 to 2021.

If data for the whole date range is not available, I would like data for all years in that range for which data is available. If data isn't available for July then I will accept data for the numbers employed at a different point in the calendar year, for example in December.

If providing all the data requested would lead to refusal on the grounds it would take too much time or cost too much to collate, then I would accept data for 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2021.

Clarification: By "school attendance staff", I mean anyone employed by the council with responsibility for monitoring, managing and encouraging school attendance.

Response

The local authority has not employed any full time equivalent attendance staff during this period. Along with current Government policy, attendance is understood as everyone's responsibility. A number of employees have attendance responsibilities within their role, but Herefordshire Council did not have any directly employed school attendance staff during the period 2011 to 2021. To meet the new statutory responsibilities outlined in "Working together to improve school attendance" the local authority is looking to recruit a number of dedicated attendance officers before 2023-24.
