Answer: There is limited recorded information on this topic. The service area has searched catalogues and indexes but found no reference to the proposal to rebuild the old Town Hall as a Millennium project. They also consulted the minutes of Hereford City Council from 1995, when the suggestions for Millennium funding bids were being considered, as well as those of the council’s leisure committee. They were unable to find any references to the proposal in these sources. We have attached extracts from the Hereford Times indicate that proposals appear to have been submitted to the Hereford and Worcester County Council’s Millennium panel for consideration, but it is likely that the City Council’s rejection was at an initial stage in the process. It is likely that no official records of the proposal were retained.
The service area was able to identify the attached references to Millennium related articles in the Hereford Times owing to an index that was maintained by Library staff before the newspapers were transferred to HARC. The index did not appear to include a reference to the Town Hall proposal. You are most welcome to consult the Hereford Times editions for 1995. It is possible that they include a reference that was not identified in the index. The historical editions of the Hereford Times are made available for consultation on microfilm in the search room at HARC. They are open to the public from 10am – 4pm, Tuesday – Friday and the second Saturday of the month.
