Request

How many individual requests has the Council received from the Home Office to provide housing or accommodation for refugees, asylum seekers, legal migrants and illegal migrants between January 1st 2022 to October 14th 2022?

How many have successfully been provided with housing or accommodation during the same time period?

Response

Please Note:

Typically the Home Office does not make requests to councils to accommodate specific individuals.

· In relation to the Homes for Ukraine scheme, people are not accommodated by the council in the first instance.

· Individuals may be housed on the basis of a homelessness application if appropriate, there is no Home Office involvement in this process.

· For refugee schemes, the council is asked to commit/offer accommodation and support. Potential matches for this accommodation are provided by the Home Office.

· Under General Asylum Dispersal, currently councils do not have direct responsibility for housing people and accommodation is sourced/provided by the Home Office's contracted providers.

· For UASC, requests are made relating to placing/supporting individuals these are made via regional discussions between local authorities and not directly from the Home Office.

· Local authorities are not able to offer any social housing to illegal immigrants, as this would be unlawful. Such individuals are not likely to approach the council for assistance in practice.
