Response

Please tell me whether the council has undertaken any tree planting schemes as part of its work to tackle climate change and/or help reach net zero or improve air quality.

Herefordshire Council has planted trees as part of the Hereford City Centre Improvements (HCCI) project with one of the aims for this project being to improve air quality. With the exception of the HCCI project, since 2015, there has only been budget to directly replace individual tree failures or removals in conservation areas in the public realm, not planned schemes to tackle climate change.

When the tree planting scheme took place?

Commenced in 2021 and completed in spring 2022.

How many trees were planted?

106 trees were planted as part of this project.

How much the scheme cost?

The tree planting elements of the HCCI project have cost in total £1,210,000. However, it should be noted that this is an overall cost including the design, surveying, procurement, hard infrastructure elements, installation and initial establishment maintenance as well as the cost of the trees themselves.

How many trees are still surviving?

A number of trees have suffered as a result of the severe weather over summer 2022, however it is hoped that most (if not all) will recover over the coming months/year. Two in-ground trees installed appear to have been deliberately vandalised.
