Request

1) Please inform me how many wheelie bins have been reported lost or stolen to your council in the last 12 months?

2) Please breakdown between wheelie bins being lost in the back of the bin lorry (accidental) and unexplained loss (i.e. stolen).

3) What investigations has the council undertaken regarding stolen wheelie bins in the last 12 months?

4) How much revenue has the council accumulated from charging people that have had there wheelie bin stolen in the last 12 months?

Response

1) Please inform me how many wheelie bins have been reported lost or stolen to your council in the last 12 months?

A) During the period 19/02/23-19/02/24, 258 domestic rubbish or recycling bins were reported missing / stolen. 1 commercial general rubbish bin was reported missing / stolen.

2) Please breakdown between wheelie bins being lost in the back of the bin lorry (accidental) and unexplained loss (i.e. stolen).

A) During the same time period as above, 20 bins were replaced due to being lost in the back of the lorry. Of these, 16 were from households and 4 from commercial premises.

3) What investigations has the council undertaken regarding stolen wheelie bins in the last 12 months?

A) When a bin is reported as lost we ask the customer to look for the bin to check if it has been left at the wrong location or with a neighbour. We check with the crew in case the bin has been lost in the back of the vehicle. Finally, the situation will be monitored for 2 collections to see if the bin returns. If the bin is not found after this we will replace it.

4) How much revenue has the council accumulated from charging people that have had there wheelie bin stolen in the last 12 months?

A) For the missing trade general rubbish bin we charged £91.89 unit price for the bin plus £27.50 delivery.

We do not charge residents for missing / stolen bins.
