In the recent Herefordshire Now issue, it says material for recycling that is not recycled is sent to landfill. Why not the incinerator?

Response

In the recent Herefordshire Now issue, it says material for recycling that is not recycled is sent to landfill. Why not the incinerator?

At the time of writing the article, which is sometime before print, non-recyclable items rejected from the Envirosort recycling facility were sent to landfill. Herefordshire Council has successfully negotiated a change in the disposal of its waste and been able to pull forward a start date for sending these items to the Energy from Waste facility which only went live in April.

How much do we currently send to landfill and how much goes to the incinerator.

In the year 2020/22 we sent 17.05% of our total waste to landfill and 43.76% to the Energy from Waste facility. The remainder was recycled.

Please also note that from April 2022 we are aiming to have not more than 1% of Herefordshire's waste sent to landfill.
