Case reference FOI2023/00677

Published 20 April 2023

Request

Has your council attempted to clawback excess surpluses from maintained schools in the past 2 financial years - 2021/22 or 2022/23?

If so, how much has been recovered and what threshold was applied for clawing back the money?

Response

Has your council attempted to clawback excess surpluses from maintained schools in the past 2 financial years - 2021/22 or 2022/23?

No school exceeded the threshold for excess balances in 2021-22.

The school accounts for financial year 2022-23 only closed at 5pm on 18 April 2023 and no consideration has yet been given as to whether any school exceeded the excess balances threshold.

If so, how much has been recovered and what threshold was applied for clawing back the money?

Nothing has been recovered in 2021-22 as nothing was due. The position for 2022-23 is unknown as the required analysis work has not yet been completed. The excess balance threshold agreed by Schools Forum for 2021-22 and 2022-23 is 20%.
