Case reference FOI2023/00459

Published 13 March 2023

Request

I should like to know all the reasons for the placement of a camera on Aylestone Hill at the crossing at the lower end of Churchill Garden, just beyond the Moreland Avenue turning.

Specifically I should like to know if it is intended to be connected to any system that identifies vehicles with a view to rationing or controlling road usage involving the use of penalties.

I should like to know the location of other cameras of the same model installed in the last six months and their intended uses.

The camera installed has been installed under the Safer Street project which is designed to assist with safer routes to be taken for women and girls. This was as the direct result of the attack of Sarah Everard a couple of years ago where the Home Office pledged capital money to end violence against women and girls in Herefordshire. The local project can be found on Timeforchange.info

This CCTV camera is not connected to any system which supplies information regarding vehicles or their owners nor does is record speeds of vehicles. It is purely for the proactive monitoring of the area to assist with the prevention, detection and reduction of crime.

There are a number of similar cameras across the city which have all been installed for the same purpose of providing safer routes to and from the city centre - all installed under the Safer Streets project.

These type of cameras have been installed along the Great Western Way, Whitecross Road, Whitecross Road subway. Eign Gate, Eign Gate Subway, Greyfriars car park subway both vehicle and pedestrian subway, King George V Playing Fields, Bishops Meadow, Canary Bridge, North Tow Path by the Rugby and Rowing Club, The Old Bridge and Commercial Road.

These cameras have also been installed in the city centre as part of an upgrade from the old analogue system to an IP system.
