Request for household waste container sizes, colours and images
Case reference FOI2026/02385

Request
I'm putting together a UK bin-store design too This request is for a typical household with wheeled bins / kerbside containers (houses), not flats or communal schemes where the containers differ. Could you please confirm:
1. Each container you issue — waste stream (residual / recycling / paper / glass / garden / food), type (wheelie / box / bag / caddy), capacity in litres, body + lid colours, and external dimensions in mm (width × depth × height) if you hold them.
2. The typical household set — how many of each container a standard household usually receives (for example 1 residual + 1 recycling + garden), not only the menu of available sizes.
3. Whether a food caddy (kitchen + outdoor) is standard, and the sizes.
4. A high-resolution logo or crest we may display on for recognition only, with a clear note that we are not affiliated with or endorsed by the council — or a link to an official brand pack. Please confirm we may use it that way.
5. If you have them, photos of each container (bin / bag / box / caddy) as issued to residents, and confirmation we may show those photos with the council credited as the source.
We've already used your public web pages where possible. This email is only for details that aren't published (especially litre sizes and dimensions) or for official images.

This request is for a typical household with wheeled bins / kerbside containers (houses), not flats or communal schemes where the containers differ.
Could you please confirm:

2. The typical household set — how many of each container a standard household usually receives (for example 1 residual + 1 recycling + garden), not only the menu of available sizes.
Answer: The standard service provided to a typical household is:
• One 180-litre black wheeled bin for residual (general) waste.
• One 240-litre green wheeled bin for mixed recycling.
Where a property is assessed as unsuitable for wheeled bin collections, a sack-based collection service is provided instead. Residents are required to provide their own black sacks for residual waste. Herefordshire Council provides two rolls of 52 clear recycling sacks annually for the presentation of recyclable materials. As sack-based collections are not suitable for glass, an additional glass recycling box is provided.
In addition:
• Households may subscribe to the garden waste service and receive one 240-litre brown wheeled bin. Properties may request up to five garden waste bins under the subscription service.
• Additional recycling capacity may be provided where required through the provision of larger 360-litre recycling bins.
3. Whether a food caddy (kitchen + outdoor) is standard, and the sizes.
Answer: The council's separate weekly household food waste collection service is planned to commence during September/October 2027.
It is anticipated that each household will be provided with:
-
One 7-litre internal kitchen caddy.
-
One 23-litre external food waste caddy.
-
An initial supply of compostable liners.
As the service has not yet commenced, these details remain subject to change.
4. A high-resolution logo or crest we may display on

Answer: The council does not provide permission for the use of its logo, crest or branding through the Freedom of Information process. Any use of council branding is subject to the council's intellectual property and branding requirements. We are therefore unable to provide a logo or confirm permission for its use in connection with your proposed product.
Information about council services is available through our public website should you wish to reference those services within your tool.
5. If you have them, photos of each container (bin / bag / box / caddy) as issued to residents, and confirmation we may show those photos with the council credited as the source.
Answer: This information is not held. The council does not maintain a stock library of photographs of waste and recycling containers.
